I’ll admit I cheated but:
The post-war building on the right is very Upper East Side, so I’m not surprised that’s where we en ded up, buy Manhattan is too big to place it just based on that. Not surprisingly none of the businesses are the same half a century later. Looks like the first four small apartment buildings survived, but the others on the block have given way to a luxury apartment tower:
Developed by The Related Companies, this 34 Story, 94 unit building was built in 2000, by the Dean of Architecture at Yale, the renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern. His vision old world meets modern design set the new standard for aesthetics. The limestone base and Georgian inspired brick façade of the Chatham were designed to harmonize and complement the classical, elegant architecture of the UES. The stately entry, flanked by huge wrought iron lamps, gives way to a grandly proportioned oval lobby toped by a 17’oculus painted blue to evoke open sky. Here the full time concierge greets each resident.
Each floor contains between 4 and 6 units; apartments range from one bedrooms with libraries 1,093sf to four bedrooms including a duplex penthouse 4,011 sf. A signature of the building is the gracious “pre war” type floor plans with roomy baths and kitchens. The spaces are adorned with custom millwork, crown moldings, bay windows, marble window sills and wide oak paneled flooring. Lofty nine foot ceilings abound from floors 4-17 and airy ten foot ceilings top floors 18 through the Penthouse. Wine coolers, Sub-Zero appliances, individually controlled heating and AC units, as well as washers and dryers offer every modern advantage.
Higher floor apartments offer spectacular views of Central Park and Midtown. A host of upscale amenities await – fitness spa, valet parking for residents, dining room, bicycle room and storage and of course the building is pet friendly.
